VISITORS to Trowbridge are in for a wheel treat when the town’s annual soapbox derby returns on Sunday.
A crowd of around 300 people is expected for the seventh Hire Standards Soapbox Grand Prix 2013, which will see people of all ages competing in homemade vehicles rocketing down Castle Street from 9.30am until noon.
Trophies will be given to the winners of the children’s and adults’ category, and event organiser Trowbridge Carnival Committee has added a new section this year for staff from the town’s pubs and clubs.
Maryrose Mantle, from the carnival committee, said: “The soapbox derby is really firmly established now and attracts a lot of people from across the region. It offers a lot of fun for all the family.
“We are looking forward to seeing friendly rivalry, especially between pubs in the town, and we expect there’ll be some really creative entries this year.”
St John Ambulance will be on hand to offer medical help, if required, while Mrs Mantle’s team of volunteers will make sure the event runs smoothly.
She said: “The course will offer a few surprises this year and I’m sure we’ll have the odd crash and spill, but we always take safety seriously.”
Those wishing to take part need to be registered by 9am on Sunday, with each competitor receiving a certificate. For further details, call 07866 698278 or email trowbridgecarnival @hotmail.co.uk
