ANGLING: Devizes seal promotion with title win

Devizes AA turned in a magnificent performance to win the Second Division National Angling Championships fished on the Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire, writes Colin Scull.
Devizes sealed the title and won promotion to the first division next season after finishing a single point ahead of Garbolino Black Horse and Maver Bait-Tech.
Kevin Rowles of Devizes finished fourth individually with a weight of 18.16kg and Dave Clapton won his section with 3.88kg.
l Martin Lenaghon of Avon Angling won the Thursday Open match at Viaduct with a winning carp-catch of 246lb 8oz.
Lewis Greenwood-King of Viaduct Juniors took second on 220lb 9oz with Alan Perkins a close third with 220lb 3oz.
Other placings: 4. Ashley Tomkins, Tackle UK 206lb 2oz; 5. Mark Poppleton, Trowbridge 163lb 12oz; 6. Roland Lucas, Wilts Angling 158lb 13oz.
Gary Etheridge of Devizes carried off top prize in the Trowbridge Open match fished on the Avon at Staverton, with a catch of 14lb 11oz.
Trowbridge’s Kevin Grant was runner-up with 11lb 6oz. Gerry Lugg clinched third on 8lb 2oz.
Other placings: 4. Dave Baker, Trowbridge 7lb 6oz; 5. Vic Abbott, Bradford 6lb 15oz; 6. Alan Hillier, Westbury 6lb 2oz.
Carp fed well in the Wilts Angling match at Leech Pool.
Top honours went to Ian Willetts from Bradford with 82lb 8oz. Stuart White took second with 82lb 2oz, with Tony Gilbert third, bagging 72lb.
Other placings: 4. Gary Etheridge, Devizes 65lb; 5. Mark Poppleton, Trowbridge 53lb; 6. Pete Neate, Holt 51lb.
Calne beat Chippenham in a club match at Hazeland, netting 35lb 15oz to 14lb 9oz.
Individual honours went to Simon Fear of Calne with 13lb 2oz with a tie for second between Mark Wooldridge of Chippenham and Gary Dodson of Calne with weights of 11lb 3oz.
Other placings: 4. Tim Carr, Calne 6lb 10oz; 5. Martin Dolman, Calne 5lb; 6. Guy Manners, Chippenham 3lb 2oz.
The Avon at Lacock was in prime form for the match between King Billy and Avon. Avon took team honours with 45lb 14oz to King Billy’s 26lb 15oz.
Sean O’Neill topped the individual standings with 19lb 3oz.
Pat Brushneen of Avon took second with 14lb 2oz and Marcus Crook made it a 1-2-3 with 12lb 9oz.
Other placings: 4. Bob Ryan, Avon 12lb 4oz; 5. Andy Pratten, Avon 11lb 2oz.
Kevin Morris from Devizes carried off top prize in the Lavington match at Baldham Mill with a catch of 4lb 3oz. Don Keates from Hilperton took second with 3lb 1oz, he was followed by Andy James of Devizes on 1lb 5oz.
Other placings: 4. Chris Brown, Worton 1lb 4oz; 5. Gordon Heywood, Great Cheverell 11oz; 6. Mark Easy, West Lavington 7oz.
Top honours in the Airsprung match at Rood went to Ian Willetts of Bradford with 144lb. Richard Whitmarsh from Frome took second with 108lb 5oz, with Dave Bancroft third on 103lb 4oz.
Other placings: 4. Lee Ross, Trowbridge 69lb 8oz; 5. Nick Ince, Trowbridge 64lb 13oz; 6. Jim Butcher, Bradford 62lb 10oz.
Robin Guy from Melksham won the Wilts Angling Open match at Turners Paddock with 27lb. Kevin Rowles from took 20lb 12oz for second, with Steve Hodge (16lb) third.
Other placings: 4. Rob Kepner, Melksham 13lb 8oz; 5. John Atkins, Trowbridge 12lb 4oz; 6. Pete Neate, Holt 10lb 14oz.
