A dozen new homes could be built on the Forest and Sandridge School site, after plans for an estate were welcomed by councillors.
Funding for a new school relies on development of the current site, with Pegasus Homes applying to build on land off Sandridge Common.
The plan was welcomed by Melksham Without Parish Council on Monday, but concerns were expressed over flooding, transport and the lack of affordable housing.
Parish clerk Mary Jarvis said: “We feel a small area for children is important, as they don’t have anywhere to go on the estate.
“It’s by no means an ideal site, but why should the children suffer because of the lack of foresight of adults?”
Wiltshire Council is the planning authority involved.
