SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Still room for improvement - Webb
MANAGER Dave Webb has warned Swindon Supermarine’s league rivals that his team can vastly improve after they secured a 2-0 win over Clevedon on Saturday.
A double from Ben Whitehead saw the hosts take three points in the Division One South & West clash, but Webb is confident that the display was a fraction of what his players are capable of.
“It’s always nice to get a good start. It’s about getting the win and you don’t really care how,” said Webb.
“We can be so much better than we showed, but that’s a positive not a negative. I know every single player is capable of going up to another level.
“It was things like the quality of our passing and taking our chances. Players looked nervous on the ball which they haven’t been in pre-season games, certainly first-half we looked very edgy.
“In terms of the possession Clevedon probably had more of the ball, which surprised me because I thought we would control that.
“Things weren’t really going to plan with 40 minutes gone, but within minutes Ben scored a fantastic goal and within minutes he had another.”
Wingers Aaron Ferris and Josh Morse made their league debuts on Saturday, the former of which begins a week-long trial at League Two Rochdale today.
And Webb - who subbed Ferris around the hour mark to conserve his energy - was complimentary of how the teenage duo had performed.
“Aaron and Josh did well and I’m really pleased with them,” said Webb.
“They are only 18 but both have bright futures ahead of them. They are natural wide players with pace and skill who put crosses in and score goals, and that gives us a really different element to our game.
Supermarine have secured the expected triple signing of Alex Swatridge, Kieran Shail and Luke Abrahart.
New College’s Swatridge and Highworth’s Shail - both goalkeepers - have signed dual registration forms. Striker Abrahart, currently sidelined with an ankle problem, has also put pen to paper.
Meanwhile, Supermarine will face Winchester in the preliminary round of the FA Cup after the Hampshire side beat hosts Alresford 3-0 on Friday. The match will take place at the City Ground on August 31.
