HELLENIC LEAGUE: Purton's Wyatt tips Fitzgerald to be top scorer
PURTON’S Mitch Wyatt has backed strike partner Blaine Fitzgerald to be top scorer in Division One West this season.
Both players were summer signings at the Red House and even at this early stage of the Hellenic League campaign, have formed a potent partnership.
With Wyatt the battering ram and Fitzgerald the pace man, the duo’s goals have helped Purton on their way to six league points out of a possible nine so far.
“I’m trying to aim for Blaine to be top scorer in the league this season and he should be really,” said Wyatt, who has been playing through a hip problem of late.
“I will chip in now and again, but my game is to hold the ball up and play him in.
“If he scores 30 and I score 10 then it doesn’t matter to me. He has that pace and is not afraid to shoot from anywhere, and he gets the luck you need as well.”
Midfielder Scott Campbell has been impressed with the way that Wyatt and Fitzgerald have dovetailed so far and believes it will stand Purton in good stead.
“The strikers we’ve got in have been good and they give us a nice combination up there,” said Campbell.
“Mitch holds it up and Blaine has the pace in behind, which gives me and Marcus (Hall) something to work off.
“That was what we were lacking last year and hopefully it will make the difference come the end of the season.”
Purton make the trip to Carterton tonight while also in action in Division One West are Fairford, who face Lydney at Cinder Lane.
Boss Paul Braithwaite is hoping to welcome back skipper Henry Traas from a hamstring injury, but Alex Rudd will miss out with the same complaint.
Jack Allan came through his return from ankle ligament damage in Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Bracknell, but Ash Taylor (facial injury) is still out.
Meanwhile, Hellenic Premier Wootton Bassett have received a bye through to the second round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.
