Woman assaulted by a stranger as she walked home
A YOUNG woman was subjected to an alleged sexual assault by a stranger after getting into his car as she walked home from a night out on Saturday.
The victim, in her 20s, had been in the Spot nightclub, in Old Town, until around 1.30am and was walking home along Victoria Road when she was approached by the man in a dark saloon car.
She reportedly got into the car and was driven a short distance before being subjected to the alleged attack, which took place in an alleyway off Victoria Road at around 2.30am.
Moments later, she walked to Wood Street and confided in a member of the public, who phoned the police.
Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the alleged sexual assault and have called on three people who were with the victim at the Spot on Saturday in the hope they can piece together what happened.
Within minutes of the appeal being published on the Adver’s website, two women police were desperate to contact got in touch to help with the enquiry.
DC James Newbery, of Swindon CID, said: “From what we know the victim had been out in The Spot and had had a few drinks – they supplied the CCTV.
“It was the end of the night and she was walking home. She left for home about 1.30am and the report came in about an hour later.
“We believe this man was a stranger to the victim but I am unable to say whether she was coerced or forced to get into the car at this stage. All I can say is it was a sexual assault.
“She then walked up towards Wood Street and confided in someone, who reported it to us.”
Three people identified on CCTV are helping the police with their investigation.
The alleged attacker is described as being of mixed race and the car is described as being a dark saloon. Anyone with information should contact Detective Constable James Newbery in Swindon CID on 01793 507922 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
