PLANS for a proposed solar park at the closed landfill site in Westbury went on show on Tuesday. Viridor Waste Manage-ment submitted the planning application for ground mounted solar panels at the site at the start of this month, with the solar park expected to cover 10 hectares on the northern part of the site.
The site, which was filled on a phased basis, took its last volumes of waste in 2004. It is now fully restored to grassland.
Viridor says the development is a sustainable proposal that will help meet Wiltshire’s renewable energy targets, generating enough energy to power 1,120 homes.
Peter Wishart, Viridor’s planning advisor, said: “This is not taking good agricultural land out of the equation, it is a brownfield site, so it’s ideal.
“The site is adjacent to a cement plant and clay pit and is well screened by woodland to the north. The panels will have a limited visual impact and will look like a water body from a distance.”
