Devizes mayor Pete Smith says he does not think he is up to running a half marathon but that will not stop him taking part in a charity event this autumn.
The Wadworth Devizes Half Marathon raises money for Bag4Sport Foundation, a charity which has become close to the mayor’s heart since he took office in May.
He said: “I think 13.1 miles might be a bit too much for me to manage but if the charity asks me to lead off the first few hundred yards that should be fine.
“It is a fantastic community charity that is doing a great job helping youngsters to get involved with sport.”
The event on October 20 is being sponsored by Wadworth brewery for the second year running.
Bag4Sport Foundation director Andy Trusler said: “The half marathon should be a fantastic event for Devizes and it is great that money raised will go to our charity, which is all about getting more people involved in sport and helping those already competing to reach their goals.”
The half marathon is being organised by Events Logic in Poulshot and it is hoped around 1,000 people will take part.
Organiser Steve Fream said: “It went very well last year and we are hoping this year will be even better.
“We have changed the route a bit so there is less chance of a problem with traffic and we are working with Devizes Running Club to promote it. As it is a new course it is a chance for the winners to set records.”
All finishers will receive a glass tankard donated by Wadworth.
