Blunsdon couple facing two challenges for charity
A COUPLE are putting themselves through two gruelling challenges to raise money and awareness for a charity that is close to their hearts.
Ann Lewis, 43, and Tom Blakey, 41, of Blunsdon, will be pushing their bodies to the limits to raise money for BLESMA.
The pair are heading to Dorking in Surrey today to take part in the Nuts Challenge which is a brutal 10-mile course consisting of 60 obstacles.
Then on September 21, Ann and Tom will be heading to South Wales to take part in the Tough Mudder, a 12 mile event in which participants endure a set of obstacles including a fire walk, plenty of mud and an electrifying finish as they run through live wires.
Sgt Tom, who is part of the parachute regiment, will be making a spectacular entrance to the event as he is set to skydive in with his regiment.
They are hoping to raise £1,000 for BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Serviceman Association, after a close friend Paul Burns, 52, an injured survivor of Warrenpoint 1979, died in June.
He was recovering from a broken leg, suffered whilst participating in the 52-mile Three Counties Bike Ride the previous weekend.
Ann, who works for KM Windows Ltd, said: “We have been training very hard most days of the week to try and build up our fitness.
“We are doing it in memory of our friend Paul Burns who was a member of the parachute regiment and part of the skydiving red devils display team.
“He sadly passed away this year taking part in a charity event where he crashed his bike and died as a result of complications during surgery.
“We are also big skydivers and skydive at the centre at Netheravon and we do a lot with the Trans4mers who are a skydiving team for BLESMA.
“We are hoping to raise around £1,000 and whenever we are out and our legs are aching we always think that at least we have legs to ache and that is the motivation we need to get through the course.
“I think the biggest challenge for me is trying to cope with the excitement, but it is going to be really muddy and really quite arduous but we think both events will be great, especially with how many people who are taking part.”
Tough Mudder is an annual event that tests the endurance of competitors with a series a tasks, which include swimming through ice water, crawling under barbed wire and running through fire.
It takes most competitors about three hours to complete the event.
