HELLENIC LEAGUE: Highworth survive late wobble
HIGHWORTH pressed the self-destruct button but still managed to hang on for a 4-3 victory against Flackwell at the Elms.
John Fisher’s side were 3-0 up with a one-man advantage at the break after a visiting player was sent off.
But although Flackwell staged a valiant comeback in the second period, a goal from the newly re-signed Matty Bennett meant the Worthians returned to winning ways in the Hellenic Premier.
Former Swindon Supermarine winger Matty Horsell put the home side 1-0 up in the opening minutes and doubled his tally midway through the first half.
Captain TJ Bohane added a third as Highworth tore their opponents apart, a situation made worse for the visitors when they had a player red-carded.
Flackwell pulled one back not long after the resumption only for Bennett to restore the three-goal advantage.
The Heathens grabbed a couple of goals late on to give the scoreline a more respectable look as Highworth held on.
Elms chief John Fisher, who told the Adver last week that his side’s main focus should be to tighten up at the back, admitted that he had mixed feelings about the result.
“I’m pleased with the win but not the second-half performance,” he said.
“At 3-0 up and with them down to 10 men at half-time, for me that’s job done and you just make sure you don’t concede.
“That’s all I wanted them to do as I wasn’t bothered if we scored any more goals, but within five minutes it was 3-1. They scored two goals in the last six minutes or so, which was disappointing.
“That takes the icing off the win as 4-3 makes it look like it was closer than it was. It could have been six or seven at half-time and we should have been out of sight.
“It’s three points but we’re still letting in goals which we don’t want to be doing. I know we won but we can’t keep doing what we’re doing.
“It was sloppy defending and the lads know how I feel about it.
“The second-half performance was as bad as the first half was good, and we were awesome in the first half.”
