HELLENIC LEAGUE: Fairford hit five against Carterton
NATHAN Gambling hit a first-half hat-trick as Fairford romped to a 5-1 home victory over Carterton in Hellenic League Division One West.
Dan Drewitt and debutant Alex Povey were also on the scoresheet as the Gloucestershire side notched their second win on the bounce.
The hosts were off the mark early in the first period when Callum Parsons crossed from the left and striker Gambling took one touch before placing the ball in the corner.
The lead became 2-0 when Gambling toed home a delivery into the penalty area, before completing his hat-trick in the 39th minute.
The forward showed that luck was going his way as he kicked the ball against his standing leg and it still found its way into the net.
Fairford spurned several opportunities to extend their advantage after the interval and Carterton gave themselves faint hope just before the hour mark.
A free kick was not properly cleared, allowing the ball to be played back in for Mark Norridge to direct home from close range.
That was as good as it got for Carterton, though, as Fairford ran riot.
Adam Smith, Callum Marshall and Parsons were all involved in the build-up that led to Drewitt driving forward, beating his man and firing into the far corner.
Former Cricklade winger Povey, signed days earlier and on as a substitute for Gambling, made the dream start to life in a red shirt when he scored with his first touch, slotting beyond the keeper with the outside of his left boot.
With three points in the bag, Fairford boss Paul Braithwaite revealed that he was delighted with the way his players had performed.
“I think we were generally the better side and it probably could have been a few more,” he said.
“We lost a few games against good teams at the start of the season, but we wanted six points out of New College and Carterton and we have achieved that.
“Probably the best thing for me was that we were missing six players due to various reasons and yet we have got players that can come in and do a job, which is a big bonus for us.
“At the end of the day Nathan is there to score goals and he scored three, so he's put a good shift in.
“Alex Povey scored with his first touch which was great work.
“Previously we have only had two wingers at the club in Callum Parsons and Dan Drewitt, and it's been quite easy for them because they know they are going to be in the side.
“But with Alex coming in, that should give them a little bit more to think about.”
Elsewhere, Malmesbury were without a game at the weekend.
