HOLT are still on course to retain the Wiltshire Four Rink League play-offs title they won for the first time in the club’s history last September, writes DAVE EATON.
They are through to this year’s final in the competition at Devizes after beating Chippenham Town in the semi-finals.
Holt, runners-up in this year’s Area C on shots difference to arch rivals Spencer Moulton, dominated the semi-final against Area B winners Chippenham Town played last Sunday at Swindon West End.
They took the honours on all four rinks to win overall by 22 shots as they ran-out 94-72 victors and collected a maximum 14 points.
The match was close in the first half with the two sides tied 22-22 across the board after five ends with Holt just one shot ahead 39-38 at ten ends but it all changed in the second half.
Holt put their foot on the accelerator and raced 71-53 clear at 15 ends, led 80-67 at 18 and finally at 21 ends won comfortably 94-72.
Don Gray’s rink only led 9-6 at ten ends but then powered away to lead 22-7 at 15 and finally won by 13 shots.
Ben Gadd’s quartet also had a comfortable win after leading 9-2 and 13-8 at five and ten ends respectively they eventually won by five shots.
Justin Davis’ four had a tight game against Neil Connor’s quartet only leading 8-6 at five ends, 13-11 at ten, 18-16 at 15 and drawing 19-19 at 18. But grabbed a three shot victory with a three on the last end.
Keith Bailey’s rink staged a remarkable comeback from 12-0 down after six ends to also win on the last end with a four for a one shot victory – the only time they led throughout the entire 21 ends.
Holt now face Westlecot in the final at Devizes on Sunday afternoon seeking to retain their title and the top county team trophy.
They beat Westlecot in last year’s semis to halt the Swindon club’s run of nine play-off wins in ten season’s from 2002 and will be looking for a repeat performance.In the semi-finals Westlecot beat Highworth 100-51.
Rink 1: Rod Summers, Andy McCann, Robbie Jeffreys & Don Gray beat Paul Macdonald 28-15.
Rink 2: Malcolm Barker, Dave Stevens, Graham Archard & Keith Bailey beat Chris Brown 21-20.
Rink 3: Steve Harris, Matt Tucker, Martin Oliver & Justin Davis beat Neil Connor 23-20.
Rink 4: Wayne Simmonds, Adrian Bolwell, Wayne Snook & Ben Gadd beat Jeremy Haselton 22-17.
Score: Holt beat Chippenham Town 94-72 (14-0).
