The Caen Hill flight of locks in Devizes closed again today following a ‘freak accident’ involving a narrow boat this morning.
Engineers are on site after the boat became lodged in the coping stones along the bank at Lock 41, just days after the lock flight had reopened following repair work when a holidaymaker hiring a narrowboat damaged a lock gate on August 24.
Joe Coggins, a spokesman for the Canal and River Trust, hopes the flight of locks, one of the longest in Europe, will reopen again today once the extent of the damage has been assessed.
“It’s a bit of a freak accident,” he said.
“The boat was stuck on Lock 41, about half way up the flight.
“We hope that we can get it open again today; that’s the priority.”
Lock 22 to 44 has been closed until further notice.
