VARIETY is the secret for the Gazette’s latest Pub of the Month, which offers more than 50 whiskeys and a constantly-rotating selection of ales.

John Arundel runs the Quarryman’s Arms in Box, which was selected as this month’s winner by regulars who praised its food menu, “beautiful views” and “wonderful staff”.

He said: “I’ve seen a massive amount of change in the time we’ve been here. I thought we would last a year, but 25 years later we’re still going.

“The restaurant is always very busy; food has become a very, very important part of the business, along with our four very high quality rooms. People expect a lot more these days, so we’ve had to upgrade.”

Located in Boxhill off the A4, its garden overlooks the picturesque Bybrook Valley.

Mr Arundel said: “We’re really lucky here; the view is fabulous. It’s a quiet area to sit under the trees. The sunsets are tremendous this time of year.”

Despite being a regular spot for visitors from across the county, the pub is still central to the community, with a fishing club, golf society and several sports teams all based there.

Mr Arundel said: “It’s a community pub; I think that’s what it has to be if you want the trade.

“We have five real ales at any one time, and we have regular ale weeks; we’ve probably had 3,000 different beers in my time here.

“I’ve created beer taster bats that I’ve drilled myself out of old cricket bats; you buy a third of each pint we have, and then chose a sixth for free. We also have a landlord’s wine list and I’m about to launch my own gin menu.”
