A man caught driving at three times over the legal alcohol limit was using his car because he needed to buy dog food, a court heard.
Adrian Routley, 47, of Little London, Heytesbury, appeared before North West Wiltshire Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.
The court heard how on August 10 he got a lift home from a barbecue where he had been drinking heavily, before taking his Toyota Yaris to a local shop, where he bought dog food and a bottle of cider.
He was stopped by police after getting into his car on Woodcock Road, and blew 106 mg of alcohol per 100ml.
Magistrates banned him from driving for 24 months, with the option of a rehabilitation course, fined him £145, and ordered him to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work.
