Southwick fundraiser Linda Dowsett says she is humbled to win the Wiltshire Times’ Community Hero this month, after she was nominated for her work with a number of community groups in the area.
Mrs Dowsett, of Hollis Way, has been involved with Southwick Entertainers amateur dramatic group since 1989, making costumes for the productions, after previously running Silhouette Fancy Dress Hire in Trowbridge from 1990 to 2002.
She is also the secretary of Southwick Seniors, an over 60s club, and last year set up the Friendship Club, which is a group for widowers that runs on the first Friday of every month.
As well as her community work, the 67-year-old is raising £5,000 to sponsor and train a guide dog and name it Gordon in memory of her late husband, with the total currently standing at £3,757.
Mrs Dowsett, who has five children, 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, said: “It was very humbling to receive the award.
“I don’t do anything I do for recognition or awards, I do it because I love people.
“I adored my husband and I knew it would be difficult after he died in 2011, so I decided not to stay in a feel self pity, but to throw myself into helping others.”
Mrs Dowsett is also an author and is one of the judges for the Trowbridge in Bloom story competition.
