SKATER HOCKEY: Flames snatch win over Avalanche

SWINDON Flames juniors made a good start to their season with a 5-4 victory over Surrey-based Ash Avalanche.
Having had little training prior to the match, the Flames made a slow start and struggled to control proceedings.
The first opening in the match came after eight minutes in bizarre circumstances, when a referee fell and distracted the Swindon defence, allowing Ash to score.
After a long delay while the injured referee was replaced, the Swindon side came out an improved side and levelled the match through Jack Townsend.
There was controversy in the closing stages of the first half, as a Flames shot that seemed to cross the goalline was not given. At the other end, Ash were awarded a goal which seemed to have been saved by Flames netminder Liam McGuire.
Townsend drew his side level soon after but then indecision at the back allowed Ash to take a 3-2 lead into the break.
Flames came close to drawing level with their opponents in the second period and were finally successful when Will Harding netted a rebound off the back wall.
But Ash broke away again to take the lead and maintained it for a good stretch with the help of goaltender Abbie Smith.
With the clock ticking down, Flames’ Harry Lane burst forward and broke the solid Ash defence with a fierce shot that found the net.
Ash were unable to convert a last-minute penalty as McGuire stood firm and with just 38 seconds remaining Alex Baker pounced to give Swindon the win.
