Town lions want you
ONE of the town’s oldest charitable organisations is on the hunt for more members.
The Swindon Lions have been giving money to good causes for almost 50 years and have raised more than £300,000 in that time.
They are also the driving force behind the annua lfirework display at the Polo Ground.
There are currently 21 members, with two more soon to join, but they need more if they are to continue with their good work.
“It would be fantastic if we could get more people to join us,” said past president Maurice Watson, 69.
“We welcome anybody who can help us. More people bring fresh ideas for us to help the community.
“There are no set demands on how much or little time that is required. It is just their inspiration we are after.”
Members of the group are aged between 30 to 80 and they come from different backgrounds. Some are in full time work, others are retired.
Maurice said: “The group helps so many causes but one of the big issues we face is people in Swindon don’t know that much about us.
“If you ask people whether they saw the firework display they say yes but most people think it was the council who funded it.”
Throughout the year the Lions have given thousands of pounds to charities.
“Because of the money raised through the fireworks we were able to present five cheques of £1,000 to good causes,” said Maurice.
“We take the rest and donate it to welfare causes.
“People can apply for help and we can provide money for something like furniture.
“If people become more aware of the Lions we will be able to reach out to more people.”
Swindon Lions is a branch of an international organisation which looks to help local communities.
However, apart from helping good causes, they are also a strong social group.
“It is very much more than just a charity organisation,” said Maurice. “I have made some life-long friends through the group.
“When we meet we don’t just talk business, but we also have a good time. We have lots of social events throughout the year, from quizzes to skittles evenings.”
The Lions meet on the first and third Monday of every month at the De Vere Village Hotel. Call 0845 833 5745 or email membership @swindonlions.org.uk.
