Grand gesture saves Chippenham club

Chippenham's Winkle Club has breathed new life into a support group for people with lung problems which was in danger of closure.
The men’s club, which meets weekly in the Old Road Tavern, fundraises for local charities.
When they heard North Wiltshire Breathe Easy Group, launched in Chippenham in 2002 as a support group for the British Lung Foundation, was in danger of folding, they donated a cheque for £1,000 – the second in two years.
Vice-chairman Valerie Scruse, 68, who has asthma, emphysema and a hole in her right lung, said: “I was preparing myself to tell our group that unless we could build up our membership we may have to shut down. I couldn’t see us going on after this December. But the Winkle Club has come up trumps again and thanks to their kindness we can keep going.”
Breathe Easy meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Lodge Road community hall in Pewsham, from 2-4pm. To join, call Mrs Scruse on (01380) 721139.
