CHAMPIONS Abbey Meads were brought crashing back to earth on the opening day of the Swindon & District Netball League season.
The club - having swept the divisions last term - saw their A team lose a titanic tussle with Croft A at Dorcan, 34-33.
Raychem A are the early pacesetters in the top flight after a 45-34 win over Nationwide B.
Nationwide A fared better, top scoring in Division One in their 50-41 success against Moredon A.
Lawn A cantered to a 43-33 win over Moredon B and Delta A opened their account with a 42-34 win against Fairford.
While Abbey’s A team faltered, the club’s new-look second string played their part in a thrilling 26-26 draw with Burmah B in Division Two.
Abbey Meads started strongly with Nicola Young and Susan Green feeding in quick balls to their shoots Georgie Turner and Georgie Brain.
The top two repeatedly scored from all angles in the D but they were matched by the Burmah pairing, as the latter went into half time two up.
In the third quarter a revitalised Sian Wait was the provider for a steady stream of Katie Halpin goals, while player of the match Lissa Commer and Shaunie Tuck made some fine interceptions at the other end.
Burmah maintained a narrow lead until Halpin popped up with a dramatic leveller with just two seconds left on the clock.
Corsham produced the most dominant display of the weekend, trouncing Pinehurst C 56-18.
Burmah A were also big winners, 41-18 against Raychem B.
Fairford B beat Delta B 44-37 and Nationwide C edged a two-goal win over Pinehurst B.
Like their A team, Croft B made a flying start to the season with a 35-12 triumph over Nationwide E in Division Three.
Ramsbury beat Ferndale 30-15, Moredon C saw off Raychem D by a 21-point margin, Nationwide D beat Fairford C 36-13 and Raychem C squeaked past Abbey C 32-29.
