Jahmene a MOBO bet
SWINDON’S X Factor star Jahmene Douglas is making huge leaps in the right direction after being nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2013 MOBO awards.
It has been a bumper year already for Jahmene, who signed a record deal with Sony in December 2012 and officially launched his first album, Love Never Fails, at the North Swindon Asda Walmart, where he used to work.
And this latest accolade comes at a time when he is working on a new, more personal album of songs he has penned himself, and is jetting around the world for charities he has been keen to get involved with.
Already with seven new songs under his belt, and returning to the recording studio in the US next month, Jahmene is taking time out to fly to Holland with Peace One Day, which is organising the first ever concert at the Peace Palace in The Hague.
He admits competition is fierce for the Best Newcomer category this year at the MOBOs, which recognise the very best of urban music.
Also up for the award are Daley, Elli Ingram, Etta Bond, Fuse ODG, Jacob Banks, Krept and Konan, Sam Smith, Shakka and Stylo G.
Jahmene is playing down his chances, to avoid the weight of expectation.
“I can’t believe I even got nominated,” he said.
“They invited me along to do a performance, and straight away told me I had been nominated.
“I came second in the X Factor already, so if I do not win the MOBOs that will be fine. I never expect anything because you will always end up disappointing yourself if you do not get it. If you cannot accept the good you can’t move on to the next stage.”
He has some favourites from the pick of the nominations, and says he is happy simply to be joining them on the list.
“I think there is a lot of talent this year, because there are so many great acts up for Best Newcomer,” he added.
“It is an honour just to be nominated.
“I really like Shakka and Sam Smith, and I am up against some great competition.
“I give them so much respect for being who they are and doing exactly what they want to do, even if it is a bit unorthodox.
“Lianna La Havas is one of my absolute favourites of the people who have been nominated, and I really hope she does well. She is really someone who just seems very close to you through her voice and the way she holds herself on stage. She is very mesmerising.”
