KARATE: New mats at Stratton
STRATTON Higashi karate club have enhanced their training facilities with the purchase of new safety mats.
The mats will improve the safety when practising self-defence and kumite (sparring) and can cover an area of up to 20 square meters for use in a group or small areas for individual use.
The club, which is based at the Nythe Community Centre, was able to purchase the mats thanks to internal fundraising as well as applying for small club funding grants through the grassroots, Community Foundation Swindon and Wilshire and the Swindon Sports Forum.
Under instructor Phil Woodfield the club are now back in training following their summer break, with sessions running every Thursday from 7pm-8.30pm at the centre of The Drive.
New beginners are very welcome at the club, which sees adults and children from the age of six taking part.
