FOOTBALL: Thompson in Conigre return
MELKSHAM Town manager Darren Perrin has added to his squad by bringing defender Dave Thompson back to the club from Paulton Rovers.
Perrin took Thompson to Frome Town from the Conigre at the start of last season but has handed the captain’s armband back to the centre-back after convincing Thompson to return from Southern League Paulton.
“He has followed me a bit in the past but he’s coming back to play at his hometown club and for nothing too, which speaks volumes,” said the Melksham boss.
“We put seven days in for him just to see what would happen and it’s a good signing for the club.
“He’ll probably play in the centre of defence because he’s wasted at full-back but he can also play in midfield if needed.”
Melksham, who were also undone by a late goal as they lost 1-0 at Willand Rovers last weekend, were beaten 3-0 by high-flying Larkhall Athletic on Wednesday night.
But Perrin was given some encouragement by his side's performance in Bath.
“In the first half, we were a little bit in awe of Larkhall because they are a good side but in the second half, we had a right go at them and on another day, we could have scored two or three goals ourselves,” he said.
“The desire and the application was there and I'm a lot more positive about things than I was a week ago when I took over.”
Striker Gary Higdon and defender Matt Sharp will both miss tomorrow's trip to Sydenhams League Folland Sports in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.
