In-demand Trowbridge actress picks TV over stage

A young actress from Trowbridge is finding her talents in high demand, after turning down a major stage role for the chance to star on television.
Nine-year-old Gemma Tucker, of Beatrice Way, will appear in New Worlds on Channel 4 next spring, but had to turn down the chance to act alongside One Foot in the Grave star Richard Wilson to do so.
Gemma, who attends the Curtain Up Theatre School in Melksham, was offered a role in A Little Hotel on the Side, at the Theatre Royal Bath.
But the stage part clashed with filming of the four-part drama – a follow-up to The Devil’s Whore – so she had to decide which she wanted for her first role.
She said: “I wasn’t sure what to do, but I thought I really wanted to try out filming, as I’ve done some theatre at the group, and I’m really happy I made that choice.”
She filmed six scenes at Ashton Court Mansion, near Bristol, for the 1680s-set drama, set on both sides of the Atlantic. It also features Game of Thrones and Skins star Joe Dempsie.
She said: “When I first went to the audition, I was a bit nervous because I hadn’t been to one before, but once I knew I had got it I was so happy.
“On the first day, I felt a bit intimidated, but the other actors were really nice when I started talking to them.
“My costume was really lovely. I had a few layers on: woolly tights, which were very hot, and nice, new shoes and a blue dress, which was really heavy, and hair extensions and a bonnet on.
“I really want more auditions now. I would love to play an assistant in Doctor Who, or maybe be the first female Doctor.”
Gemma’s mother, Karen Tucker, said: “I’m very proud. I just have to bring her back down again afterwards.
“The show’s not really child-friendly, but she will watch her little bit and we’ll get a copy when it comes out on DVD.”
