Football clash is all in the family

A SWINDON bride and her family attempted to convert the groom from the richer to the poorer on their wedding day.
Last month, Rebecca Wenrich, 25, married Zach, 26, who is a fan of Chelsea, owned by billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Rebecca is originally from St Andrews Ridge while Zach is a native of Indianapolis, America.
As a present on the day, her family gave him a Swindon shirt in an attempt to change his allegiances to the Robins.
Unfortunately it did not work but he now keeps a close eye on both teams and is eagerly awaiting the upcoming match between them.
“Zach has been a loyal Chelsea fan for many years, and is still a Chelsea fan,” said Rebecca.
“He wants Chelsea to win, but thinks Swindon have a fair chance of winning because Chelsea haven’t been performing well lately.”
Zach is looking forward to the game and will be trying to watch the game online when the two teams meet tomorrow night at the County Ground.
The couple met while studying at the University of Kent and now both reside on the other side of the Atlantic.
Zach was more interested in American sports growing up but started following football in his teens.
“Zach used to play American football, but due to an injury when he was a teenager he had to stop and started playing ‘soccer’ instead,” said Rebecca.
“To learn about the game he watched it on TV and one of the only teams that were shown on US TV at the time was Chelsea, with the others being Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
“He liked how they played, could follow them easily here and became a fan. This was probably about 11 years ago now.
“One of the reasons his allegiance has not changed is that Swindon is rarely shown on television, so following them is quite difficult.
“Chelsea coverage is good here, he can watch the Premier League on a number of sports channels every weekend, and there are a number of local pubs that frequently show football.
“Chelsea also played a game here in Indianapolis in August against Inter Milan in the Guinness International Cup, which we went to.”
Rebecca admits she is not much of a football fan herself but was also presented with the team’s second shirt as she was going away.
She said: “There is no rivalry in our house over football, Zach is the football fan, I am not.
“My cousin is a huge Swindon Town fan. She’s a season ticket holder and goes to a lot of away games as well with my uncle.”
