HIGHWORTH rally driver Shelly Taunt heads north this weekend, as she and regular co-driver Julie Murphy prepare to tackle the fast and tricky stages of the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire.
The Pickering-based event has attracted a large entry from drivers from all around the UK as the race is a round of the British Rally Championship, the BTRDA Championship and the hugely popular Historic Championship.
Taunt will once again be driving her Subaru Impreza in the national section of the event.
The girls admit to being slightly nervous as this is their first competitive outing this year, their last event being the Premier Rally back in November.
Taunt said: “Unfortunately we lost our major financial sponsors at the end of last season due to the recession.
“It was a very sad time, our sponsors had backed us for the past nine years - which is an amazing amount of time for any form of partnership in motorsport - but we wish them all the best and luck for their future and it’s fantastic that we are able to remain great friends”.
Co-driver Murphy underwent an operation back in May, sparking the pair’s decision to take a break from competitive driving.
Although the duo haven’t competed in rallies for some time, Taunt and Murphy were invited to take part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed in july, during which Taunt gave passenger rides around the Forest Rally Stage over thee days, of which she said: “I had the time of my life, it really is one big party”.
The girls are hoping to compete in at least four events before the end of the year, although they will not enter into any championships at this late stage.
