Swindon firefighters on the picket line
Fire fighters from around the town have gone on strike this afternoon to protest about changes to pensions and retirement ages.
Crews from Swindon, Stratton and Westlea have walked out for four hours this afternoon in what they hope will be a message to the government to return to the negotiation table.
Crew Manager Chris Pye, 31, who is based at the Drove Road Station, says it is with reluctance they have gone on strike.
“This is not something we want to do but we have been left with no choice,” said the fireman of six years.
“We accept that money is short and changes have to be made but the fire service has already had to take a lot.
“The increase in pension contribution will hit very hard.
“We are hoping the government will see this as a warning shot and carry on with the talks.”
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue say all the planned cover is in place and there have been no major call-outs to deal with by 1.30pm.
