SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Winter on defensive lookout

CHIPPENHAM boss Steve Winter is keen to focus on defence as he bids to mould the Bluebirds in his image.
Having taken the job full-time last week Winter has already snapped up full-back Stuart Tovey, but with Ben Murray and Shane Blackmore out injured Winter was forced to play striker Alan Griffin in the heart of his defence in the disappointing home defeat to Bedford Town last weekend.
As well as preparing for tomorrow’s home clash with Redditch United, Winter is looking to bring in a few new faces as soon as possible but is finding it difficult given the new season is only seven games old.
“I want to bring in a few but when you’re seven games into the season, players don’t want to leave,” he said.
“Players go to a new club and they don’t want to up sticks after seven games.
“They get to Christmas, see where they are in the league and what chance they’ve got of doing anything and then decide from there.
“I don’t want to rush out saying ‘I want him and I want him’ to fill the holes. I’d rather bide my time to get the right players in for the club and for the way we play football.
“I don’t want to say ‘he’s a right-sided centre-half’ – which we do need – and say ‘he’ll fit in with us’ without knowing a bit about him.”
Off the pitch, Bluebirds chairman Neil Blackmore is continuing his search for a director of football at Hardenhuish Park to fill the role vacated by Adie Mings in September 2012.
“We’ve always been looking since Adie went to Chelsea. I still believe that philosophy is right and with the way that we’re set up now with the four teams, I do feel that we need a person to pull them together,” he said.
“I haven’t made an approach to anybody. From the applicants that we spoke to last week I have spoken to one of them about some options but an offer has not been made to anybody.
“It has to be the right person to work with the management and players and vice-versa. “ Cirencester are in FA Cup action this weekend as they take on AFC Portchester in the second qualifying round.
