HELLENIC LEAGUE: Highworth not taking the Mickey
TWO late goals helped Highworth Town avoid the prospect of extra-time and penalties, as they ensured safe passage into round two of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup with a 3-1 victory over Oxford City Nomads.
TJ Bohane and Matty Horsell both netted in the final 10 minutes to send Highworth through and keep manager John Fisher happy on the touchline.
Fisher had said prior to the game that he would quite happily swap his side’s defeat to Nomads in the Hellenic Premier Division on Tuesday for victory in the knockout competition, to avoid dropping into the Supplementary Cup or – in Fisher’s words – “the Mickey Mouse Cup”.
And Fish got his wish, despite watching his side fall behind early in the game.
“It was a good performance and we’re going in the right direction,” the Worthians boss told the Advertiser.
“It’s good to go through as it keeps our season alive. I always say that you have plenty of games in the league to sort things out but if you go into the Supplementary Cup then that’s a bit of a waste of your season.
“We created a lot of chances in the second half but we couldn’t score and I thought at one point we were looking at extra time and penalties, but luckily that hasn’t happened.”
After conceding inside five minutes, Highworth rallied and got themselves back into the match thanks to a fine TJ Bohane strike with 20 minutes of the first half remaining.
The Worthians worked hard to break their guests down after the break but it took until the 81st minute for Horsell to put them in front, before Bohane rounded off the victory with his second.
Fisher was complimentary of the opposition post-match, saying: “They’re a good team and they played the ball about nicely at times.
“It was a good win, a good result and we can look forward to the next round.”
