Eye witness tells of Marlborough car chase drama
An eye-witness has told how a car being chased by police smashed into the wall of St Mary's Churchyard in Marlborough this morning.
The drama began in Hungerford, when three men were seen trying to break into a van.
Thames Valley police tracked them but asked Wiltshire Police to take over when the suspects, driving a silver Renault Laguna, crossed the county border.
Wiltshire Police called in the force helicopter to join the search, following the suspects along the A4 into Marlborough where their car smashed into the churchyard wall, at the base of the steps, in New Road.
A member of staff at the Bear Hotel opposite said: “A car was racing down the street followed by the police cars and there was a screech of breaks and then the car hit the churchyard wall.
“I didn’t see the other two men get away. The third one tried to run away but then the police were on him and a Philip Denis delivery man held him down.
“There were three or four police cars outside here and one was Thames Valley.
“It was lucky no one was hit when the car was coming down before it hit the wall.”
A spokesman for Thames Valley police said the other two men have since been arrested.
