SCHOOL dinners often bring back memories of tough meat and cold semolina. However, lucky children at one Swindon school are treated to award winning food every day.
Lawn Primary School was recently given the council’s Eat With Confidence award, which is normally reserved for cafes and restaurants. It is given to premises which not only score highly in food hygiene inspections but also provide high quality customer service.
Felicity Benfield, the catering manager at the school, said: “I was very proud when I found out. We have had regular inspections and we have scored five stars in all of them. It has not just been a case of working hard especially for this but maintaining high standards at all times.”
One of the recipes to the school’s success has been choice for the pupils. Yesterday saw youngsters have a chicken roast dinner with the option of cheese and biscuits.
Felicity said: “There is pretty much nothing we haven’t tried at one time or another. We do curries, pasta and jacket potatoes. There isn’t a set menu we use so I can decide what I want to do.”
Felicity has been working at the school with her team for seven-and-a-half years and caters for more than 200 children on a daily basis. The work of the kitchen team received rave reviews from the pupils who all say they look forward to lunch every day.
Amy Wildish, eight, said: “I really like the lunch at school. It is always good when they gives us a choice of what we want.”
Equally enthused was Katie Barrett, eight, who said: “I think my favourite is the bean wrap. The jacket potato day is also really good because you can come up with some strange mixes for what goes on top.”
Headteacher Kelly James said the award was representative of the importance food plays within the school’s curriculum.
She said: “Being the first school to win the award is always nice but Felicity and the team have worked very hard.”
