Master plan to bring in customers

Members of the public are invited to an exhibition this weekend that will reveal plans to spice up Calne’s town centre by developing retail and attracting more shoppers.
A master plan for the town centre has been created by consultants Urbanisme and Townswork with the help of Calne Town Council, members of the town team and other stakeholders.
It is at a very early stage, and at the exhibition residents will be shown maps with several different proposals and asked to give their opinions.
Planning consultant Gerald Milward-Oliver, who has been working on the plans for the past three months, said it could form part of a larger neighbourhood plan in the future.
He said: “It’s principally looking at the retail heart of the town.
“It’s a fairly precise area from Church Street up to Oxford Road and then from the A4 across to Sainsbury’s.
“The town team is really determined to make things stronger in the town and we’re convinced that there is huge potential.
“Calne needs more footfall, we need to bring people into the town, but there are huge opportunities for tourism and to improve the retail offer of the town.”
The exhibition will be open at the Baby Cottage on Beach Terrace tomorrow from 5pm to 7pm and on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
Copies of all exhibition materials will be available on Calne Town Council’s website www.calne.gov.uk
