Chippenham girl wins Blue Peter badge for her charity efforts
Blue Peter fan Maya Skelton is proudly showing off the show’s coveted badge after her entrepreneurial skills raised £84 for the charity, Cancer Research.
Maya, 12, of Ashfield Road, Chippenham, wanted to help the charity so she asked her school, Hardenhuish, if she could organise a cake sale.
Maya said: “They said we couldn’t make the cakes ourselves for health and safety reasons, so we had to buy them and we only made £5 profit because cakes are expensive. So then I thought of selling doughnuts and it went really well – all 120 were gone in seven minutes.”
She was helped by her friend Katie Butt, also 12.
Maya wrote to the makers of Blue Peter, first aired in 1958, to tell them what she had done.
After watching the children’s programme for years, she was delighted to get a response back from them with the coveted badge included, which she has been wearing with pride all week.
Maya said: “I was very, very excited! I like to wear it and lots of people at school have wanted to hold it.”
