Bid to find short term PO site in Malmesbury

Calls have been made for alternative post office facilities in Malmesbury after it was announced the Co-Op facility will close during the store’s refurbishment.
Coun Kim Power, with the support of fellow councillors, has asked the Post Office to identify whether it can find an alternative site, or provide a mobile unit.
Staff at the Co-Op, High Street, confirmed it is to undergo a £350,000 refurbishment from October 22 to 31.
Store manager Andy Weller said: “We were trying to keep the post office open but for health and safety reasons it will be too hard to allow access to it.
“The refurbishment will bring a new feel to the store. It will really make the whole customer experience better.”
Among changes to the Co-Op will be a new floor and and increased fresh produce.
The closure of the post office in the half-term week could mean people have to travel to Sherston, Crudwell or Tetbury for their postal services, proving a burden for the elderly withdrawing their pension, and those without transport.
Coun Power said: “I have read the concerns and I have had people ask me about it.
“It’s understandable they can’t open the post office as they are going to have work going on there with ladders and tools, but there’s no alternative arrangement.
“I rang the Post Office to say this isn’t on and could we have a mobile post office.”
The Post Office has so far directed people to use other local post office services but Coun Power said she would raise the matter with Wilt-shire Council if the Post Office was not more forthcoming.
Town and Wiltshire councillor Simon Killane has also said he will push the Post Office for an alternative facility. He said: “I think the closure is for too long. I will talk to them about it, even if it is just to get the basic services in for the vulnerable.”
He has suggested looking at other options, including putting on special bus or taxi services, or a car share service to Sherston.
