Scrum down for better learning at Westbury
Pupils from Westbury Junior School with Dave Attwood and David Sisi, Glenn Leech and Tina Lawes from The Consortium, teacher Mrs Storr, and Vicky Heslop
Westbury Junior School hosted Bath Rugby players David Sisi and Dave Attwood on Monday to launch new Bath Rugby Foundation education programme Stickability.
Sponsored by Trowbridge-based company The Consortium, Stickability is a literacy programme designed to give young people aged nine and 10 the opportunities and support to develop learning skills and confidence, with lifelong impact.
The programme will be delivered in primary schools through a combination of classroom-based literacy sessions and active tag rugby sport sessions.
It aims to reinforce five core learning skills: individual problem solving; perseverance and focus; emotional resilience; empathy and supporting others; and teamwork and collaboration.
Vicky Heslop, education manager at Bath Rugby Foundation, said: “We piloted this programme in local schools and found that it really boosts children’s confidence. This programme really works, but it would not have been possible without extraordinary support from The Consortium.”
Eleanor Storr, Year 5 teacher at Westbury Junior School, said: “The scheme is really good because children love sport, rugby and being active, but are less interested in writing, and Stickability combines the two.
“It means the children learn the key skills which they will then be able to use in their future life. The scheme really motivates them and they look forward to the sessions.
“What’s really nice is that it means there are more adult volunteers in the class, as The Consortium provides lots of help, which is good for the children and it’s clear they really enjoy it.
“I’m seeing later in the week that they are using the key skills in other parts of the curriculum and it’s great that the children are transferring the skills to the rest of their work.”
In total, 30 schools will be involved in the programme this year and spaces are still available. To nominate a school to take part, email vicky.heslop @bathrugby.com
