Devizes MP Claire Perry says she is delighted to have been offered the job as an assistant government whip.
The 49-year-old mother-of- three heard the news on Monday and said: “It is brilliant. I am going to learn so much. I was driving up from Wiltshire when I got a call from Number 10 asking if I was in London. I said, I will be by 4pm. So I had two minutes with the Prime Minister and he offered me the job.
“I will be involved in getting the business of the Government done. I hope it will give me a fascinating insight into the way Parliament works.”
Her new position will involve her giving up the job as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Defence Secretary Philip Hammond and as the Prime Minister’s special adviser on curbing commercialisation and sexualisation of children.
She said: “I have had to give up that position because, as a minister, I can’t comment on the work of other departments.” Internet safety would be the purview of the Home Office.
On Saturday Mrs Perry was at Marlborough for the opening of the first of the town’s Mop Fairs, where she took a turn on the rides with her son Hector.
