SKATER HOCKEY: Flames come second in SASH League

SWINDON Flames Juniors secured second place in the SASH League and qualification to the National Championships with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Ash Avalanche.
Again forced to rely on their now usual six outfield players due to a number of absences, Flames started the game well and took an early lead through Will Harding which was soon doubled when Jack Townsend set up Ryan Couling-King for the second.
When Townsend broke forward to increase the lead the Swindon side looked well in control, but their dominance was disrupted right on half-time when Alex Baker got dragged into a fight following a minor infringement.
With both teams reduced to three players for the start of the second period it was Flames who struggled to get their passing game going, and Ash managed to pull one goal back after capitalising on a rebound off the back wall.
With the benefit of a two-minute power-play when restored to four players the Flames could still not press home their advantage and the game became more of a struggle.
Ash netminder Abbie Smith denied the Flames on a number of occasions, but with Swindon stopper Liam McGuire also looking secure and defender Dette Wagerfield putting in a storming display at the back Ash rarely threatened to score themselves.
As the game neared the final two-minutes Ash tried to get something from the game by leaving a forward in front of the Swindon goal but the tactic was nullified when Couling-King netted his second goal of the game to make the result certain.
