Nine-year-old Esmé Wall rose to a challenge worthy of her idol, Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, and raised more than £100 for the Dogs Trust with a sponsored walk around her school on Friday.
Esmé, a pupil at Wansdyke Primary School in Devizes, and her band of supporters braved the miserable weather to walk from the school grounds in Downlands Road to the local nature reserve of Drews Pond and back again, raising £109 for the charity.
Esmé told the Gazette: “Helen Skelton is always doing new things, so I asked my dad to set me a challenge and he said I was to raise money for charity. I thought of a sponsored walk and I chose the Dogs Trust because I love dogs but I’m not allowed to have one.”
Esmé, eight of her classmates and class teacher Selena Davey pulled on their rain gear and walked the route, which was about a mile long. Esmé’s mum, Philippa, said: “The walk went really well, even though it was quite windy, but at least it didn't rain hard. The total raised so far is £109.69, with other donations promised.”
