Honour surprises good neighbour
AVID gardener Pam Woodward is feeling blooming marvellous.
The 82-year-old has been presented with the Good Community Neighbour Award in recognition of her role in the Hastings Court Community in Wroughton.
Pam was the latest resident to be awarded by Swindon Council’s housing team for her work in the community and yesterday was presented with the framed certificate.
The pensioner, who has been living at Hastings Court for 12 years, said: “It was a complete surprise. I was speechless when my name was called and I was presented with the award.”
Pam, who is treasurer of the Hastings Court Club and runs the sheltered housing scheme’s coffee mornings, was nominated for the award in recognition of her kindness and support to other residents.
She is an active member of the gardening club, and is integral in ensuring open spaces remain tidy and peaceful for residents.
Pam also promotes the sheltered housing scheme to the wider community by inviting people to try the activities taking place in Hastings Court.
She said: “I’ve been running the coffee mornings here for about eight years.
“I also help my neighbours by going to the shop for them, helping them with their washing or even putting eye drops in their eyes. I enjoy helping them.”
The Good Neighbour Awards highlight the positive actions of council tenants who go the extra mile for people who live nearby.
Coun Richard Hurley, cabinet member for public protection, housing and streetsmart (delivery), said: “Pam has gone above and beyond for her neighbours and she always has a kind word and a smile for everyone at Hastings Court.
“The Good Neighbour Awards are about highlighting the actions of tenants like Pam and I would like to thank her for always being there for those that need support.”
Residents can begin nominating tenants who go above and beyond for their neighbours for next year’s awards from early 2014.
