BOWLS: Swindon club get ready to roll

INTER-CLUB team competitions in the national indoor championships have been taking place this month, although in the individual championship events it is still early days.
Westlecot men are not due to play until November in the over 60s double rinks where they have been drawn against MidGlos A. Fairford have been awarded a bye and do not enter the competition until round three.
In the Mason Trophy, Westlecot ladies meet MidGlos on November 8 while Fairford have been paired with Cotswold C .
Tomorrow sees Westlecot and Gloucester clash in the Egham Trophy, the national mixed inter-county championship, with two rinks taking place at each venue. The winners face Carterton in round two.
The Yetton Trophy, the ladies’ national inter-club championship, begins today but Westlecot and Fairford ladies do not enter the contest until the second round on Saturday, November 9 against MidGlos and Cotswold (Stroud) respectively.
The men’s equivalent, the Denny Cup, begins on Saturday, November 2 with Westlecot paired with MidGlos again in round one.
Westlecot made a swift exit out of a mixed team competition, losing 14-2 to Clarrie Dunbar in the Top Club.
The Champion of Champions individual area competitions are well-advanced as the final stages are due to be played early next year.
In Area 10, Lucy Smith (Westlecot) defeated Fairford’s Linda Kingston 21-11 and will now face Pat Thorley (Cotswold) in the area semi-final.
Her father Neil Smith, who reached the final stages last season at Hayling Island, is through to the Area 10 semi-finals after beating Neil Chandler (Cotswold) 21-11. He now faces Carterton’s Andy McIntyre next weekend in the semis.
Meanwhile, Westlecot men have made an indifferent start in their 2013/14 Wessex League campaign, winning one match and losing the other.
In their opening game they thumped Chipping Norton 108-54 and collected 15 out of a possible 16 points.
However, last weekend they lost to Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) for the first time, going down 91-65 and only taking honours on one rink.
Wiltshire men have been drawn away to Gloucestershire in the first round of this season’s county championship on November 23.
Again managed by Westlecot’s Neil Smith, Wiltshire have also entered the Over 60 inter-county championship and Over 60s League for the first time this season.
In their first Over 60s League match on Wednesday, November 6, they will face Hampshire with three rinks at home and the other three away.
Elsewhere, Wiltshire ladies were beaten by Berkshire in their opening friendly match of the 2013/14 indoor season.
Under the leadership of indoor president Evelyn Tape (North Wilts) they were defeated 125-94 at Rivermead (Reading).
Wiltshire only took the honours on one of the six rinks with Jean Collier (skip) leading Eileen Hawker, Sylvia Lucas and Pat Sharp to a 26-17 success over ex-England international Theresa Darnell-Langton’s foursome.
In the presidents’ match, Tape’s rink lost 20-18.
Wiltshire ladies have been drawn away to Oxfordshire in the first round of the Atherley Trophy, the inter-county championship, on November 17. The team is set to be chosen on November 5.
