HELLENIC LEAGUE: Shrivvy make their point

SHRIVENHAM manager Dave Turner felt his side fully-deserved their point after they held high-flying Oxford City Nomads on Saturday, writes CHRISTOPHER PANKS.
Turner has not seen his side win since October 1 and the 1-1 draw at Barrington Park ended a run of five straight Hellenic Premier defeats.
The Nomads arrived in Wiltshire off the back of three straight wins but were immediately put on the back foot by the hosts.
That pressure failed to produce a goal and after 15 minutes Shrivvy were behind as Adam Lovegrove cut in from the left wing, beat three players and fired into the corner.
The Royals were unfortunate not to be level before half-time, but as the Nomads started to regain control after the break, Josh Fowler struck to earn his side a well-deserved point.
“We were on top for the first 15 minutes and then conceded against the run of play,” said Turner.
“It was a beautiful goal, I could argue that one of our boys should have got a tackle in, but when a player is that skilful, you have to admire it.
“We didn’t let our heads drop after we conceded and should have been level at half time, if not ahead. Then we scored against the run of play and a draw seemed about fair.
“They are a very good side, all of the top five sides are.
“The real difference is that they will perform well week in, week out and grind out results.
“With no disrespect to the rest of the teams below them, the money helps as well, and we saw some class players. But we’ve matched them and got what we deserved.
“The performances have been very good in the last few weeks, but we haven’t got what we deserved, so it’s a very welcome point.”
Despite having ended the disappointing run of defeats, Turner refused to get carried away.
“It’s a very good point on the day, but we have important games coming up and if we lose them, this will count for nothing,” he said.
“I have had to throw this side together six weeks before pre-season and I think the performances show that we’re starting to gel as a side, but we need to pick up points in this league.”
