A B&M store is to open in Chippenham next year, bringing at least 70 jobs to the town.

The discount variety retailer is planned for the old Comet building at Bumpers Farm which has been empty for a year.

Foinavon Chippenham Limited has approval to vary a planning condition to allow B&M to take it over.

The national retail store sells toys, clothing, toiletries, food and drink, soft furnishing and fabrics.

Tim Rainbird, director of Foinavon Chippenham Limited, said in a letter to Wiltshire Council: “The occupation of vacant Unit 3 by B&M will deliver significant socio-economic benefits by generating 35 new employment opportunities for the local community.

“The proposals also represent an investment of approximately £200,000 into the local economy, which is significant in the current economic climate and will contribute positively to Chippenham.”

Chippenham Town Council supported the application but had concerns over “the potential detrimental effect the proposed development will have on the vitality of the town centre.”

The Bumpers Way unit has been empty since electrical chain Comet went into administration.

A spokesman for B&M Retail said: “We are delighted to announce that B&M will be occupying the empty premises at Bumpers Farm and creating over 70 jobs.

“The new store is expected to be open at the beginning of next year and we look forward to becoming an integral part of the local community in Chippenham.”

B&M said it would begin recruiting soon and jobs would be advertised at www.bmstores/careers
