ABBEY Meads triumphed 56-43 over Bristol side Imperial Royals in Regional League 3.

The visitors made a solid start and were 15-11 up after the first quarter.

Abbey continued in that vein at the start of the second quarter and opened up a 12-goal advantage.

However, complacency and misplaced passes allowed Royals to pull it back at 27-23 at the halfway point.

Changes were made at half-time with Kate Hewins coming on at goal shooter, while Chrissi Lewis moved to goal attack and Jules Hewitt switched to wing attack.

Following the resumption, Abbey’s defensive play was strong throughout the court.

Jo Monty did an excellent job of putting the Royals attack under pressure, while Helen McGrath and Suzi McDonald upped their game to stop the shooters getting into dangerous positions.

Hewins’ Velcro-like hands made a difference in the shooting circle as she collected accurate feeds from Jules Hewitt and Lorraine Bulpitt.

This gave the shooters the chance to score some cracking goals in the third quarter, with the height of Hewins and Lewis too much for the defence to handle.

Abbey began to relax in the final quarter and dominated with their fast-paced and controlled game, taking a 13-goal win at the finish.

Elsewhere in the division, Lawn B lost 55-33 to Penryn.

In Regional League 1, Lawn A were beaten 46-31 by Saints Cornwall while in Regional League 2, Pinehurst overcame Hucclecote Comets B 39-34.

Abbey C thrashed Ferndale 51-15 in Swindon & District Winter League Division 3. Abbey D triumphed 35-20 against Coleview after coming from behind in Division 4, with Teresa Askins named player of the match.

Some of Abbey’s newest recruits took to the court at the south west Back to Netball tournament in Bristol.

The Wiltshire side started with a 7-3 win over Gordano before losing to Cougars and sharing a close encounter with Cirencester.

Off the back of defeat to a well-drilled Malmesbury side, Abbey ended the day on a high with a 6-3 victory over Clevedon Saints.
