Children at a Chippenham school have been experiencing a day in the life of an evacuated child.
St Peter’s primary school took part in a Dig for Victory day as part of a World War Two history project.
The seven to eight-year-olds used an authentic wartime ration book to cook rock buns, using powdered egg, Stork margarine and a small amount of what was rationed sugar.
They turned over the soil in the school’s vegetable garden to prepare the ground for the spring.
And in a make do and mend session they created embroidered cushions as Christmas presents, with curtain lining fabric rescued from the school hall.
The curriculum-based learning day was run by The Nature of It, a Chippenham not-for-profit organisation specialising in outdoor engagement and therapy for schools, community and charitable groups.
Founder Leanne Taylor said: “The children finished the day by linking the relevance of World War Two campaigns to the present and sustainability.”
The Nature of It will be working with the town council to create a community garden for Chippenham and a workshop for Greenwood working enterprise projects.
