Westbury woman's £25k benefit fraud

Westbury woman Claire Griggs was handed a 12-week suspended prison sentence by North Wilts Magistrates Court on December 5, after pleading guilty to benefits fraud totalling £25,208.78, which she must repay.

Mrs Griggs, 33, of Woodland View, Dilton Marsh, pleaded guilty in November to failing to notify Wiltshire Council and the Department for Work and Pensions that her husband Damien had returned to live in the family home in 2010. As well as the jail term, suspended for a year, she must do 80 hours of unpaid work and pay costs of £85.

Could be people are looking, as they should be - at the greater cost to the country caused by tax evasion and tax avoidance. Benefit fraud amounts to less than 1% of the TOTAL government spend. The 70 BILLION lost in tax revenue is a tad greater.
Benefit fraud should be dealt with - but why does the govt shy away from applying the law in equal measure in relation to lost taxes?
Theft is theft after all, surely?
