POLL: Should Nick Martin still be Swindon's mayor?

This Is Wiltshire: Coun Nick Martin remains mayor after edging Thurdsay's vote Coun Nick Martin remains mayor after edging Thurdsay's vote

THE Mayor of Swindon, Nick Martin, survived a historic vote of no confidence on Thursday evening after accusations the mayor made derogatory remarks about people with learning difficulties earlier this year.

In October, during a presentation by a council officer into issues faced with adults with disabilities, he is alleged to have said: “They aren’t still letting those mongols have sex with each other are they?”

The Labour Party argued that this demeaned the position of Mayor and that Coun Nick Martin (Con, Shaw) should no longer hold the title.

He offered his resignation if the complaints against him were dropped but this was rejected and he will now face a standards hearing next year.

However, his supporters say while this investigation is underway due process should be followed and that any vote of no confidence would be to effectively find the mayor guilty before proven so.

An amendment of this nature was passed by the council and the mayor kept his place in office after edging the vote on the altered motion 27-25.

Now we are asking the people of Swindon if this was the right decision.

I'm not defending the bloke, but you do realise the comments are 'alleged'? Nothing has actually be proven, at all. In fact, the allegations appear to have come from two, er, Labour councillors.

So, ask yourself, why is it you believe them?

It is an absolute disgrace that anyone should be treated to what could only be described as a kangaroo court.

The fact that the Standards board will be looking at this case means that in effect the accuser is having two chances to put forward their case.

This is not natural justice hence my remark about a Kangaroo court.

But this is Swindon.

What happened to the premise that a man is INNOCENT until proven guilty.

As I said, this is Swindon.

It's not politically correct to expect that people with learning difficulties are not referred to as "...mongols", it's a simple matter of people expecting to be referred to in language that is sensitive and appropriate. Is that too much to expect from you, stu2010?

Essentially, you are asking for the right to speak about people in public using any language you wish, regardless of whether they are likely to take offence. If there's anyone that needs to grow up, surely it's you?

@eminencegris: whether you like it or not, or agree with it or not, it is 'political correctness' for you to insist that others use words that you deem acceptable rather than ones they're happy to use.

We are entirely to over-sensitive in this country and it does nobody any favours.

It's also interesting to note that those who approve of mass, uncontrolled immigration don't quite seem to realise that the vast majority of other nations are very much not like the UK in their attitudes and 'wording' of certain things.

They also have no interest in being 'politically correct' because they see it for what it is: one group of people trying to impose their views on others.

Sadly, there are far too many people in this country who oppose the core British value of free speech.

Ringer, your last post is totally out of order. People with learning disabilities have a right to be treated with respect, Language as allegedly used by the mayor is totally inappropriate for someone in public office to use. Your assertion that that we are over sensitive is in this instance way wide of the mark. I expect many on this site would be happy to call you any number of names that are not appropriate. However decency stops us from doing so. If it is proven that Nick Martin said what he said he should be kicked out of local politics for good. Instances like this should be above party politics and treated just as a matter of decency. When I have met Mr Martin I have found him boorish and objectionable. He has a track record of inappropriate behaviour with council employees. It is not a matter that he should be removed from office. He should never have been in office in the first place.

And if they wanted to, I would be more than happy for them to so so. I mean, why would I care? The very last thing I'd ever do is try and bully and force them into not doing so if they wanted to.

Let them get on with it, what difference does it make unless you WANT to be offended?

Your views are to be expected, and are understandable in this instance, but you must admit you're hardly offering an impartial point of view.

Ringer my back ground of working with the learning disabled has no real bearing on the use of language. In today's society it is no longer acceptable to use words like P@K@ when referring to a person of Pakistani extraction, it is no longer acceptable to say Y@D when taking about someone of the Jewish faith and it is no longer appropriated to say M@NG@L as is alleged here. Your defence of this type of language says more about you and your world view than anything I possibly could.

I believe in freedom of speech. You may use whatever words you wish, that's fine, but please don't think you're somehow in the right because you're happy to dictate to others which words they may or may not use.

You maybe happy to use words that others find offensive and that would be your right in private but not in public as you could be accused of in-sighting hatred. You say that left wingers want to control others. I would say that people in political life have a responsibility to treat there constituents with fairness no matter their creed colour or ability.. If Mayor Martin has said what is alleged then how is that fair or respectful? It never ceases to amaze me, as a general point, how bloody right wing the average contributor to this site is. Don't worry, Davey Gravey, Empty Car Park and their socialist mates from Talk Swindon will be along soon to distort the poll result in their favour.
Grow up. I dont know anyone on that site and have never made a comment on it. Please stop posting lies about me.
I didn't say you did know them, or that you posted there, so stop accusing me of doing so. I was generally referring to the little cabal of lefties that have 'mysteriously' started posting here regularly of late.

I am wise to your use of the 'thumbs' buttons at this site though - you didn't honestly think people wouldn't notice, did you?
What you posted is there in black and white.
No idea what you are on about regarding thumbs?
I regularly give your comments a thumbs down as i don't agree with you most of the time. That is as far as it goes.
I am honest on here.
Well fair enough then. But I admit that as my views are so controversial I literally *have* to vote myself up otherwise I'd look a complete spanner. The fact that you don't agree with me means you get multiple downs and I give myself multiple ups. That's life, even for you and your socialist mates.

Again, that was NOT me posting. I have no idea why the Adver allow this to go on.

Still, rather ironically, it shows that others just cannot stand the idea that the majority do not hold the same views they do.

@Ringer - I've not insisted upon anything. You, on the other hand, are insisting on the right to offend people as you see fit, based in this instance on their disability.

You say that we are oversensitive and that it does nobody any favours. Please explain why you feel that it is oversensitive of people with disabilities (or, more likely, relatives of people with disabilities) to insist that they aren't called 'mongols'? You say it "...does nobody any favours." I'd suggest it does anyone who belongs to a minority every favour for them not to be open to the kind of verbal abuse you believe to be your birthright.

It's very odd that you choose then to make a comment about "...mass, uncontrolled immigration," - it seems you've chosen a timely moment to demonstrate a generalisation about people who disagree with you, irrespective of the fact that it has nothing whatsoever to do with the discussion point. Please try harder.

I'm intrigued by your suggestion that the 'vast majority of other nations are not like the UK in their attitudes...'. Clearly you're more familiar with the prevailing attitudes of other nations, but which do you mean, exactly? Saudi Arabia, perhaps? Uganda? North Korea? Or perhaps you mean the EU nations. Avid pro-European are you, Ringer?

Your point about political correctness being about 'one group of people trying to impose their views on others' made me smile, I must say. Your view is that you should have the right to say whatever you like, about whoever you want, wherever and whenever you choose. You know what? I agree that you should, but you should be prepared to pay the consequences for it, both socially and in the eyes of the law, as our town's miserable mayor is learning to his cost.

Finally, your point about 'core British values' is great. I'm all for free speech, but the law, parliamentary privilege etc. have always meant that free speech is an ideal rather than a reality.

Here's two core British values that are demonstrably more firmly embedded in the national psyche - those of respect and tolerance. Hundreds of thousands of British people lost their lives in the last century for those values, fighting a regime that was as intolerant and disrespectful, as politically incorrect as you might say, as is possibly imaginable. Yet you bleat about reserving the right to call disabled people 'mongols' on some spurious notion of 'political correctness' inhibiting your right to free speech.

It's good to know that their sacrifice wasn't in vain, @ringer.

Yes, your entire post boils down to your wish to control others and make them say and do what you would prefer. That, however you slice it, is what dictators do.

'Tolerance'? What, the nation who once oversaw the biggest empire on earth? You might want to rethink that.

BTW, have you ever been to places like Poland, the Czech Republic... even Spain and Italy in many areas? I don't think you'd like what you heard and saw, not one little bit.

You are against free speech if all you do is sit their smiling as people get arrested for speaking freely. But, then, that's not surprising, it's what left-wingers do... outwardly pretend to be 'nice' but are actually controlling and completely against anyone who does not share their worldview. To the point of always punishing them by law. Truly frightening.

eminencegris very well said. Ringer, you can compare me to a dictator as that is your right. But nevertheless I will continue to say that if proved Mayor Martin has been offensive and should be stripped of his role. Talking of dictators, you have still not answered my question from a day or two ago: What part of Nazi ideology do you sympathize with? You have already admitted elsewhere that you have some sympathy with National Socialism so come on let the readers of this page know your true colours.

Both actually - admittedly I vote myself up multiple times to avoid looking like the unpopular twit I really am but why not?! As you say, the site moderators do nothing about it so I just go ahead and do as I please.

Just don't ever believe the votes as I've skewed most of them in my favour, purely to make you and your socialist chums look like the bad guys.

How sad can anyone be - getting into a strop about "votes" which seems to be a capability which Newquest added to all of their nationwide websites, which people with a life haven't even noticed existed (or am I in a minority?)

Hey Ringer, why don't you say "SCRAP BUS LANES" or such-like in capital letters after your post, just like politicrat does with his opinions - then "in your head" it will really make a difference!

Please bring back BobFM and itsamess - it used to be fun in those days!

Does the advertiser realise you can vote as many times as you like if you know how? I do hope they would not use this result as any kind of meaningful statement as it would be simple for some saddo to take 10 minutes to skew it.

In fact given that the mayor is under investigation and what is alleged is exactly that alleged to allow people to sit spamming the vote would take the term kangaroo court to a new level.

I am sure they have better journalistic integrity than that.

There are a couple of idiots who wish to dominate the site, abuse the thumbs up and down facility and goad others with lies about them just because they don't share the same view.

Ban them so the rest of us can comment with respect of others and without the cyber bullying.

FLOGGITLAD says...

excuse me while I get back to the point in fact, this was a vote of no confidence in the mayor of Swindon.
no legal jargon about guilty or not guilty, just a vote of confidence.
if the councillors thought he was doing a good job, then they would vote for confidence in him, if not then they should have voted against simple as that, the fact that one tory did vote against him and another left before the vote, says a lot.. But as usual things are turned around to save face and to save the party. Swindon is now an utter disgrace..
I wonder now what the fate of those two councillors who voted against him or abstained will be...
excuse me while I get back to the point in fact, this was a vote of no confidence in the mayor of Swindon. no legal jargon about guilty or not guilty, just a vote of confidence. if the councillors thought he was doing a good job, then they would vote for confidence in him, if not then they should have voted against simple as that, the fact that one tory did vote against him and another left before the vote, says a lot.. But as usual things are turned around to save face and to save the party. Swindon is now an utter disgrace.. I wonder now what the fate of those two councillors who voted against him or abstained will be... FLOGGITLAD

There are a couple of idiots who wish to dominate the site, abuse the thumbs up and down facility and goad others with lies about them just because they don't share the same view.

Ban them so the rest of us can comment with respect of others and without the cyber bullying.
No, I don't think they do. I've reported the person who is posting using my login name and they've done nothing about it.

I've also reported Empty Car Park several times, again, nothing seems to have been done about him.
Well, there are a number of false things aimed at me in this thread from you!
If site moderators do their job then I can prove my innocence. Sick of being hounded by you and my name continually being mentioned when things have nothing to do with me.
What do you expect when you continually accuse me of things I've never done? Why do you think you can do as you please but never expect anyone to pull you up on it?
Pull me up on what? Your claims are wrong so you cannot pull me up on a pack of lies.
If you are not abusing the site then someone using your account is.
Which is exactly what I've been reporting to the Adver moderators!

You're constantly having a pop at me on here. I don't mind at all, but just don't expect to do it and get nothing in response.

eminencegris very well said.
Their approach to private initiative is something I would agree with.

You may be interested in learning more about the National Socialist People's Welfare organisation. It would be right up your alley and was, although you may not like it, hugely supported by the Nazis, who were very much into the same social welfare policies and charity supporting that I've little doubt you are.

Of course history has gone on to convince us that the Nazis were pure evil but, like everything in reality, nothing is 100% appalling.

I agree. I have no wish to engage in any of this nonsense, but Empty Car Park can never refrain from his stupid and inane insults and snide remarks and Davey Gravey does, unfortunately, continually accuse me of things I've not done.

There's no chance I'll let either of them just get away with that nonense.

I do love how you immediately and automatically down vote anything I ever post. It's hilarious. I don't even think you read it.

It would appear so.

Seeing how little influence they seem to have, regarding sprawl and infrastructure, I'd suggest they also have no purpose.

Practically the only comment in this long thread that I agree with! What do we pay them for anyway?
