Machinests at a Devizes firm made more than 50 dresses for girls living in poverty in Africa and Asia.

The dress-making spree at Between The Sheets Limited was undertaken after design director Jane Allen was inspired by a sewing evening at Potterne Springs WI, where dresses were made for the charity, Dress a Girl Around the World.

The charity provides dresses for girls living in poverty who otherwise wouldn’t own one.

It believes that every girl deserves the dignity of owning at least one dress. It distributes dresses to countries including Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Cameroon and the Phillipines.

The staff at Between The Sheets, which makes luxury bedding and is based on Hopton Industrial Estate, made more than 50 dresses in two days.

Mrs Allen said: “It’s a fabulous charity and we (at Between The Sheets) are mostly women and mothers.

“The thought of a little girl getting a pretty little dress is brilliant.

“The dresses we have made are very colourful.”

The machinists made the dresses using two bags of off- cuts of 100 per cent bamboo material.

The dresses will be taken to Potterne Springs WI, which is sending them to the charity. The WI is collecting dresses until January 13.
