A debt advice service is looking for new funding of its own, so it can help a rising number of Trowbridge people seeking assistance with their finances.

As people struggle with their post-Christmas debt, Community Money Advice Trowbridge is anticipating a big demand for help and is looking for financial support to help those who are struggling.

The volunteer group has been financed since opening in 2011 by churches, organisations and individuals, enabling it to help more than 50 clients.

It offers advice on prioritising debt and budgeting for the future.

The service, run by a group of Christians from various churches, shared an office with West Wilts Vineyard Church in Trowbridge, so there was no rent, phone costs or printing costs.

Now it has its own office, in United Church, but with increased overheads.

Celia Waghorn, a community awareness volunteer, said: “We need regular continued support, as we are voluntary and rely on the goodwill of others.

“In the run-up to Christmas, many people will have come under pressure to spend more than they can afford. Together with the changes brought in by the Welfare Reform Act 2012, we anticipate a substantial increase in demand for our services.”

The service has nine volunteers and 12 in training, but it is looking for more in roles such as money advisor, support and clerical assistance.
