The inquest into the death of Warminster boy Sean Turner at Bristol Children’s Hospital will begin at Flax Bourton Coroner’s Court in Bristol on Monday.

Sean’s parents, Steve and Yolanda Turner, argue that failings at Ward 32 contributed to the death of the four-year-old, and that the investigations which followed the fatality are contradictory and inadequate.

The inquest, which is expected to last seven days, comes just months after the inquest into the death of Luke Jenkins, seven, of Cardiff, who died in similar circumstances to Sean at the hospital.

Coroner Maria Voisin recorded a narrative verdict in his inquest, which took place in November, and ruled that she had heard no evidence that there had been any “gross failures” in Luke’s care.

The Turners say they are now concerned that Sean’s inquest, which will also be presided over by Ms Voisin, could result in the same verdict.

Mrs Turner said: “It has been a long time coming, as it’s almost two years to the day in March since Sean died, but we are concerned about what is going to happen after attending Luke’s inquest.

“All we want to hear them say is that they did make mistakes, but they have listened to the parents and are making changes to ensure it never happens again.

“We are concerned with how open the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is going to be, but our expert reports highlight some major issues in Sean’s care, so hopefully we will get the right verdict.

“It is going to be upsetting for us to hear, but it’s important the issues are discussed openly as lessons need to be learned.”

Sean died at Bristol Children’s Hospital in March 2012, six weeks after corrective surgery for a congenital heart condition, while Luke died just weeks later in April.

Mrs Turner added: “We feel that it was obvious from the first week after Sean’s surgery that there were things that could have been done. We believe he would still be here if something had been done sooner.”
