The annual social afternoon of Wootton Bassett & District Art Society featured an exhibition of members’ work and a competition in three sections.

The judge, professional artist Carole-Ann Peart, of Urchfont, commended the very high standard of work.

She congratulated all who took part, and wished the club a successful year while town crier Owen Collier added a message of goodwill.

The society’s president Phil Flowerdew thanked everyone for their enthusiastic participation during the past year, and said that new members are always very welcome.

Competition results: Reflections (drawing or painting to depict a reflection or mirror image): 1. Bill Baines; 2. Michael Spurling; 3. Jack Fairgrieve. The second category was entitled In Conversation (depicting two people who meet and talk in the street): 1. Pat Kitching; 2. Sue Tennant; 3. M Spurling.

The final competition, A Pub Sign (either factual or from imagination): 1. P Kitching (The Hare); 2. M Spurling (Acorn Inn); 3. Hugh Dow (The Moonrakers).

The result of the Artist of the Year award, for which all competition points (for entries and/or awards) throughout the past 12 months are totalled, was announced by Phil Flowerdew. In third place was Trish Nurse; second was Pat Kitching, and the winner, by two points, was Michael Spurling. who was delighted to receive the trophy from the president.

Artists of all abilities are welcomed at the Civic Centre’s upstairs hall on Wednesdays from 2pm.
